In other words, it appears that a promise to set aside the ordinary "judicial machinery" is to be obtained, but that no steps are to be taken to see that this promise is kept. It is certain, however, that the Roman Catholic Missionaries at Canton will take care to have witnesses present at the trial, and that their report of the proceedings will be forwarded to England.
